k.LAB — Integrated modelling
A cutting-edge platform redesign that simplifies complex systems modeling, broadens accessibility, and enhances usability with a sustainable, user-focused approach.
The challenge
k.LAB is the integrated modelling platform developed by integratedmodelling.org within the ARIES (Artificial Intelligence for Environment & Sustainability) ecosystem. Technically powerful, but with a steep learning curve — its potential was only accessible to highly specialized researchers.
The goal was to open the platform to a broader audience — researchers, policy makers, environmental technicians — without sacrificing scientific depth.
The approach
The work focused on three axes:
- System simplification: mapping the most common usage flows and reducing perceived complexity through information architecture and clear UI
- Broader accessibility: redesigning entry points for users from different backgrounds, from data scientists to non-technical professionals
- Sustainable usability: durable design decisions built to evolve with the platform without requiring a full redesign with every release
